It has always been important to Lana and Susan that the Board of Directors be active and knowledgeable about their Association and the vendors that service their Associations. To this end, they regularly offered Annual Board of Directors Orientations to each of their Associations. They also invited the Board of Directors to come visit and tour the management company in order that the Board of Directors understand the controls and procedures in place to safeguard the assets of the Association. They saw the importance of transparency with respect to communications with the Board of Directors.
Lana and Susan were instrumental in developing accounting software that is currently being used by a national management company. In the development phase of the software, they not only included the management company staff but the auditors to make certain that the software had adequate controls, audit trails and reports. This resulted in management and accounting software that to this point is one of the best used in the industry.
In addition to their leadership and management skills, both Lana and Susan believe it is important to be give back to the industry that they work. Both have been active in Community Associations Institute (CAI) as writers, speakers and advisors.
The success of a management company starts with the tone at the top. It has been my observation that Lana and Susan instill a culture that emphasizes the importance of integrity and ethical behavior. They have always been visible and actively involved in all areas of the management companies operation. The skills that Lana and Susan have developed over their careers will serve them well in establishing Community Association Management Professionals.
